[Aquamacs-devel] line in buffer but not displaying

I'm (still) working on getting VM to work well with Aquamacs 2.0

  GNU Emacs 23.2.1 (i386-apple-darwin9.8.0, NS apple-appkit-949.54)
  of 2010-05-09 on braeburn.aquamacs.org - Aquamacs Distribution 2.0
  Copyright (C) 2010 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

and I noticed an odd problem.  When I run the function vm-mail, to
start composing a message, the new frame looks like:

  To: 
  Subject: 
  --text follows this line--

(minus the indentation, of course).

But when I ask how many lines are in the buffer, I get the answer
4.  And, sure enough, if I copy the contents of the buffer,
and paste it somewhere, I get:

  To: 
  Subject: 
  X-Mailer: VM 8.1.90a under 23.2.1 (i386-apple-darwin9.8.0)
  --text follows this line--

(minus the indentation, of course).

I'm surprised that there could be a difference between what's in the
buffer and what's displayed.  Does anyone have an idea what might be
going on, and whose problem this might be?
