Enrico,

when compiling on 10.6, use this for the configure call before "make  
bootstrap" (or "make"):

CC='gcc -arch i386' ./configure --with-ns --without-x

We already know how to compile for 64 bit architectures, but we're  
waiting for a copyright assignment to be submitted before the path is  
applied.
That's just a matter of days.
