I understand that these are Apple's HIG's, but they are just
that--guidelines. Adium is not the only app out there that uses a
non-inutitive image for its icon. Look at Panic's applications--a truck
for the FTP client, a leaf for their web development tool, and a magnet
for their nntp reader. Or Cyberduck--its icon is a rubber duck! Or
NeoOffice--its magellan-style ship. Or MS Office--the stylized W, X, P,
etc. All of these icons have strong brand recognition among users, and
it would make no sense to change them just because Apple's HIG's
prescribe a certain look.

Among the various options that were put forward for the new icon, I
think the clipboard is the strongest one, but I prefer the original icon
above all of them. A subtle refreshing of it might make sense,
especially to make it render nicely at 512 pixels, but scrapping it
doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
