David,
Amid all the back and forth and different icon ideas, I must admit, I've
lost track of why re-branding is even necessary. If you're worried about
Is there an icon designer out there who can re-render the current Gnu
head to look good at 512 pixels, and perhaps subtly update it along the
lines you suggest? An evolution, as opposed to a total break?
Brand recognition is definitely "worth something"--it's worth a lot.
It's hard to build, hard to find the right look and feel, the right
image. I've changed the icons of my own shareware programs a lot over
the years because I never felt I had the right brand for them. Finally,
when the Oxygen icon set came out, I had what I wanted--and I've built
the entire brand identity of my shareware around those icons.
As you might recall, the reason you and I chose this particular icon by
Massimiliano Gubinelli was because it looked fresh and clean compared to
the other Emacs icons out there, yet still retained the spirit of
Emacs--just like Aquamacs itself. :-) Unlike my shareware programs, I
think we got this one right from the start. I'd be very, very cautious
about changing it dramatically. You could do far, far worse than to
simply keep things as they are.
My two cents as the project's co-founder,
Kevin
